Tow truck from outer space
This set is clearly from the period when the Lego Company was not very sure what they were doing.
So, it's a tow truck with a futuristic look (to say the least). It's a nice exercise in style but the post-modern style doesn't fit well in the average technic sets theme. It's a shame because otherwise the technic functionalities are brilliant, and that's was saves the sets.
The 3 cylinders are activated by one piston. But what's interesting is that there are 2 air tanks (one on both side of the truck) that store the pressure. After some pumping, the tanks are full and you can use the switches to make the pistons work for some time. Classic, but pretty neat and really well implemented.
Now the ultimate pneumatic sets would be to integrate air tanks with a motorized compressor like in the set "8868 - Air Tech Claw Rig".
On a side note: the set works very well with the "8428 - Concept Car" both visually and technically.
